TEACHERS PARTICIPATING IN SPARK STAFF DEVELOPMENT ARE ELIGIBLE TO ENROLL IN THE SAN DIEGO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION COURSE:

SPARK

Elementary (K-2 or 3-6) Curriculum
Middle School (6-8) Curriculum
High School (9-12) Curriculum
Active Recreation (ages 5-14) Curriculum

DESCRIPTION:
The SPARK Staff Development program provides teachers with a practical, working knowledge of the SPARK PE curriculum, as well as the skills and instructional techniques needed to successfully implement it. Curricular components are modeled, dissected, and discussed.

OUTCOMES: Teachers will learn:

  • The Theory behind an innovative health-related physical education program.
  • Organizational and management techniques necessary to provide quality physical education instruction
  • How to develop and maintain student health and fitness through SPARK procedures.
  • How to improve students’ fundamental movement and sports skills through SPARK teaching progressions.
  • Methods of physical education class scheduling, facilities management, and equipment acquisition.
  • How to motivate children to be active outside of school.
  • Techniques that encourage students to commit to a lifetime of health and physical activity.

GRADING STANDARDS:
To earn credit, participants must:

  1. attend all staff development training sessions (SPARK Premium Program training—12 hrs);
  2. implement SPARK with their students; and
  3. complete 3 “Lesson Checklists,” from SPARK curriculum binder (see form included).

FEE: $72.00 FOR ONE SEMESTER UNIT OF CREDIT; include $20 late fee after the registration deadline.

PROCEDURES:

  1. Print and mail completed Registration Form and payment to SDSU Extended Studies--must be received by May 9, 2008.
  2. Look over Lesson Checklist Instructions
  3. Implement SPARK with students and complete 3 Lesson Checklists
  4. Return completed Lesson Checklists to the SPARK office by May 22, 2008.
