The SPARK High School Physical Education Program

Purpose:
SPARK's new High School Program (HS) is targeted to grades 9-12 physical education (PE) specialists. For SPARK, moving up grade levels has been a natural progression, with the ultimate goal to create quality scope and sequence from Pre-K to 12th grade. With the addition of the SPARK HS program, that goal has been realized.

Program Components:
When a school or district chooses to partner with SPARK, they receive the three components necessary for successful implementation of program concepts and methods:

1. HS Teacher Guidebook: This spiral bound document is designed to enhance the training experience and provide the curriculum tools necessary to instruct health promoting PE classes. The Guidebook includes sample standards based lessons, assessment tools, unit plans, and more in an easy to understand, easy to implement format.
2. Teacher Training: SPARK HS workshops are designed to incorporate "New PE" methods -- focusing on content selection with a more individualized theme, and activities that downplay the traditional team sport model approach. Where sports are addressed, they are more lifetime in nature and highly modified. Teachers learn inclusion strategies that ensure every student, regardless of ability, experiences success. Attendees are also exposed to a variety of innovative assessment techniques and tools to authentically demonstrate student achievement. And, SPARK workshops are FUN!
3. Follow-up Support: Sample curriculum and a training session is not enough. Unlike other programs, SPARK is committed to extensive follow-up via systematic phone calls, and maintaining an 800 number, e-mail site, and list serve while providing lifetime consultation to everyone who participates in a SPARK HS workshop.
