The SPARK Early Childhood Physical Activity Program

A Healthy Beginning:
SPARK Early Childhood (EC) has been developed for: Head Start, public and private preschools, day care/childcare providers, and WIC agencies. SPARK EC is designed to provide high activity, academically integrated, enjoyable activities that enhance motor development and school readiness skills in children ages 3-5.

Program Components:
When an agency or organization chooses SPARK EC, they receive three components necessary to create an exemplary physical activity program:

  1. Curricula and Materials:
EC Manual (for Pre-School Teachers): SPARK has created an innovative three-ring binder containing over 400 pages of engaging, age appropriate activities. SPARK EC includes 12 dynamic instructional units (e.g., Movin' Magic, Fancy Feet, Silly Scarves and Streamers) presented in scope and sequence for daily lesson plans. SPARK EC was designed specifically for the preschool teacher; a practical document presented in a simple and easy to use format.

  2. Training for Staff:
The focus of Early Childhood staff development is to train the preschool teacher on age appropriate activities that motivate and encourage young children to be physically active. SPARK workshops are fun and "hands-on." Preschool teachers learn by doing and are motivated by SPARK's dynamic and knowledgeable trainers. SPARK trainers travel nationwide to provide workshops.

  3. Lifetime Follow-up Support:
Sample curriculum and a training session are not always enough to facilitate systematic change that lasts. SPARK is committed to extensive follow-up via the "SPARK Stars" institutionalization model, offering lifetime support through our 800 number and e-mail consultation, and sending a quarterly newsletter to each workshop attendee that includes updates and teaching tips.
